Louis S. Arruda, 92, of Fairhaven and formerly of Fall River, Tiverton and Winter Haven, FL passed away Sunday, March 6, 2016 in Our Lady’s Haven. He was the beloved husband of Guilmira S. (Silvia) Arruda with whom he shared 68 years of marriage.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late John S. and Marianna (Pacheco) Arruda he lived the last few years of his life in Fairhaven. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Fairhaven.
Mr. Arruda served as an Antitank Gun Crewman in the United States Army during World War II. He served in New Caledonia, Fiji Islands, Solomon Islands, Philippine Islands and Japan. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his achievements in ground combat.
The family would like to thank the staff at Our Lady’s Haven and Beacon Hospice for the tremendous care provided to Louis. They will always be grateful.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Joyce A. Magno and her husband Albert of Fairhaven and Gail A. Davis and her husband James of Voluntown, CT; a son, Carl L. Arruda and his companion Laurie Duclos of Swansea; three sisters, Beatrice Cabral of Tiverton, Theresa Felteau and Helen Dias both of FL; a brother, Armand S. Arruda of Fall River; five grandchildren, Kimberly Campos, Keith Medeiros, Melissa Davis, Jared Arruda and Kyle Arruda; six great grandchildren, Austin Campos, Alanah Campos, Sebastian Gottschalk, Ethan Gottschalk, Brielle Arruda, and Isabella Medeiros; and many nieces and nephews. He was the grandfather of the late James Davis, IV and the brother of the late Mary Zurowski, Marianna McCarthy, Georgianna Thibeault, John S., Manuel S. Joseph S., and Antone S. Arruda.
His funeral will be Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 8 am from WARING-SULLIVAN at FAIRLAWN, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven followed by a mass at 9 am in St. Mary’s, Main St., Fairhaven. Burial will follow in Pocasset Hill Cemetery, Tiverton, RI. Visitation will be Wednesday 4-7 pm.
