Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Manuel and Mary (Sylvia) Alves, he was a lifelong area resident. He was a graduate of New Bedford Vocational High School, and Kinyon-Cambell Business School and was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Fairhaven. Joseph served in the United States Army and later was employed as a salesman at the former Newbury T.V. Company and for 25 years as a dispatcher for Morse Cutting Tools, retiring in 1988.
Joseph loved his family dearly, especially his grandchildren. He was an avid Yankees, Patriots and Celtic’s fan. He enjoyed politics and listening to Frank Sinatra. He was a member of the VFW #2892, Fairhaven and the American Legion, Fairhaven.
He is survived by a son, Stephen Alves and his wife Linda of Somerset; two daughters, Susan Allen and her husband Terry of Acushnet and Joanne Menard of New Bedford; six grandchildren, Joshua, Chelsea, Austin, Peter, Kayla and Brian; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Mary Louise Medeiros.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 8:00AM from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at FAIRLAWN, 180 Washington Street, Fairhaven, MA 02719 followed by his funeral mass at 9:00AM in St. Mary’s Church, Main Street, Fairhaven, MA 02719.
