Born in New York City, he was a graduate of Phillips Academy Andover, Yale University and Harvard Law School. He practiced law at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP in New York City until he was appointed by President Richard Nixon to serve as an Assistant Secretary of Commerce. As such, he headed up the Economic Development Administration during the terms of Presidents Nixon and Ford. Later in his career he worked in the Dallas, Texas area as General Counsel for Partners National Health Plans and then as General Counsel for NYLCare Health Plans of the Southwest. He was first married to Sara Conrad, divorced and then married to Blair Whitehead Warriner.
Endowed with a delightful, whimsical sense of humor, he had a positive, optimistic outlook and loved to sing and whistle. His great passions were literature, music, especially that of Mozart and Bach, golf and fly fishing. In his retirement, he wrote and published a novel entitled A Dangerous Marriage.
He was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Blair; his daughter, Dorsey Conrad Blunt; his son, William Winthrop Blunt; his grandson, Nathaniel Blunt, all of New York City; his stepdaughter, Nathalie Warriner of Buck Hill Falls, PA; and his sister, Joan Murray of Worcester, VT, as well as one niece and three nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 31 at The Church of the Good Shepherd, 9350 Braddock Rd., Burke, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Nature Conservancy, 4245 North Fairfax Dr., Suite 100, Arlington, VA.
