Sarah Lillian Shelton Griffin, age 84, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 24, 2017, at 8:15 pm. Sarah was born on August 12, 1932, in Chalybeate, MS to the late Lytle Boone and Lucy Wood Shelton. Sarah was one of six children. She was a graduate of Ripley High School in Ripley, MS and Blue Mountain College in Blue Mountain, MS. Sarah was a proud Northeastern Mississippi native who always wanted to share God’s love with others through her actions. She loved gardening, sewing, riding her bicycle, playing the piano, bowling, square dancing, and rooting for the Washington Redskins (through thick and thin!). She was very involved in her church and served as a Mother’s Day Out preschool teacher, Sunday School teacher and Women’s Missionary Union Director through the years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend to many. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ret. MGySgt. John F. Griffin. She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Sarah Patricia Bemis and Kevin Lee Bemis of Bristow, VA and Lucy Ann Griffin of Marion, NC, her grandchildren, William Marshall Daudert, John Christopher Daudert, and Emma Grace Daudert of Marion, NC and Austin Patrick Bemis of Bristow, VA, and her sister, Lola Bradley of Fincastle, VA. The family will receive friends for a celebration of Sarah’s life at Ox Hill Baptist Church, 4101 Elmwood Street, Chantilly, VA on Friday, April 7, 2017, at 10:00 am. They ask that you wear your brightest, happiest outfit and bring your favorite memories of Sarah to add to a memory book. Sarah will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA June 27, 2017 at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to plant a flower or garden, be kind to others, take a bike ride, donate to the charity of your choice or root for the Redskins in her memory.
