Passed away peacefully on the morning of September 18, 2022, after a decade-long struggle with dementia.
Mike is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Karen Sheble, daughters Michelle Capozzoli (Anthony), and Alison Jones (Chris), and his three grandchildren, Hartley and Everett Jones, and Cecilia Capozzoli.
Mike was born on July 1, 1947 in Washington, DC, and was raised in Fairfax County. He graduated from the University of Richmond in 1969 with a degree in sociology. He began his career in urban planning. His avid love of music, and his entrepreneurial spirit, led him to open Penguin Feather Records, a legendary local chain of music stores. After selling the stores, he had a successful career in real estate for many years.
Mike’s greatest love in life was his family. He and Karen were married in 1971, and they later welcomed two daughters: Michelle and Alison. Mike was steadfastly present for his children as a cheerleader, which took on many forms: coach, tutor, and mentor. He loved being a dad and a grandfather. He lit up around his grandchildren, even as his health declined.
Those who knew Mike were touched by his fun-loving spirit, charm, loyalty, and brilliance. Mike was a wonderful listener. It is also worth noting that his air guitar was second to none. He instilled a love of education, a love of athletics, a love of life, and a love of Dewey Beach in his children.
His family is so grateful to have enjoyed many wonderful years and memories with him. He has left behind an amazing legacy and is finally at peace, free of the disease that gripped him for years.
In the words of one of his favorite musicians, Tom Petty:
“You belong among the wildflowers, you belong somewhere you feel free.”
In lieu of flowers, and to honor his love of children and education, donations in Mike’s memory can be made Saint Jude’s Hospital, Alexandria Tutoring Consortium, or NOVA Foundation. Please see below for links to the donation pages
A memorial service will be held for Mike, Saturday, November 5th, 11:00 AM at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church - 1500 N Glebe Road, Arlington, VA 22207. Reception to follow in the fellowship hall.
