I worked with Mark at Hunters Woods ES for several school years.  I always found him to be a very caring, compassionate, and professional educator who loved working with children.   I was shocked to hear of his passing and send condolences to his close friends and family. 

I am crushed by this loss. Mark Stewart got my son emotionally through elementary school and is a big reason Aiden has grown into the man he is. He was a truly empathetic consummate professional who was not afraid  to think outside the box

Mark came for a short visit.  We took surf lessons in Carpinteria, went bass fishing in Lake Castaic, and did an overnight backpacking trip to Santa Cruz Island, taking the boat from Ventura.

I worked with Mark at Hunters Woods a few years ago.  He was a wonderful, knowledgeable teacher who truly cared for his students. I enjoyed working with him very much. He will be miss terribly by his students and colleagues. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Mark was the best man at our wedding in 1995. He and I became great friends in college at William & Mary. We were both in a friend group with some other transfers and returning students who lived in the same dorm. Mark was very popular, in part because he was so hilarious.

After college, I lived at his parents’ house in Alexandria until I found a full-time job. Mark and I found work at about the same time, and we rented an apartment near the King Street metro station. I worked in DC and he was in a bank training program, at different locations. We’d meet up with college friends on weekends and had a lot of fun.  

After a year, I moved to New York for a job and didn’t see Mark much. But we made a point of going fishing every year in the fall. Usually we’d float the Shenandoah for a day. Sometimes we’d go west. Our last trip was in 2001. We fished for trout in Montana and southern British Columbia. One scene I’ll never forget was fishing in belly boats (intertubes with seats) in a lake that had a mini-glacier melting into it, with mountains all around, while the sun was setting. And of course the fish were biting.

That fishing trip ended on September 10. We flew back to my house in California and Mark was scheduled to fly back to Virginia on September 11. That dark day dawned and my wife, Jill, and Mark and I spent the day in shock, watching the horrific scene on tv. Mark flew home a few days later.

We spoke on the phone shortly after. He told me he was quitting banking. He said 9/11 led him to reevaluate his life. He wanted his life to mean something more than making a living. He decided to become a teacher. 

Mark and I haven’t spoken much in a while. We lived far apart and each built our lives around family and home. Of course I regret not picking up the phone lately and saying “Mark, how’s it going?” 

More than that, I’m sad for him, losing his rich, full life too soon, and for the people who were in his life every day, and now won’t be.

I am so sorry for the loss of your brother. I know that life will change for Wanda, the girls, yourself and Bryan. Mark's special gift to share himself with his students and the impact he made to others continues to live on.

Virgina Beach Easter 1979. Great memories of Mark. 

There are no words to express the loss and grief you are experiencing. May it be a measure of comfort to you in this darkest of times, that I can personally attest the happiness and well being of you and the girls was all that truly mattered to him. He will be missed by those who loved him and they are many indeed.

My heart aches for this loss.  Mark was a genuine soul.  I will miss our education talks and general life discussions.  Mark was so passionate about teaching,  his students, his family, and life in general.
