Born in Manchester, England on May 9, 1937. Her father, William Hunter, was a professor of Mathematics at Manchester College of Technology, and her mother Helen Mary Potts was a math teacher. Her brother Christopher Hunter, a professor of Mathematics at Florida State University, predeceased her in 2008.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews James Hunter, Alison Hunter, Dr. Rosemary Hunter, Andrew Hunter, and by her grand nieces and nephews Hannah Aaron, William Aaron, Noelle Hunter, Sarah Hunter, Meg Hunter, Ben Hunter, and Parker Kelley.
She attended Girton College, Cambridge University from 1956-1958 where she studied economics. She subsequently received a Certification in Social Science and Administration from the London School of Economics in 1959. She was Certified by the Institute of Almoners in 1960 and served as a social worker from 1960-1965 at the University College Hospital in London.
She moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States to continue her career in social work in 1965 working at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She briefly returned to England to care for her mother in 1972, then returned to Philadelphia after her mother passed. She began working at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital upon her return, and she retired from there after almost two decades working as the Director of the Department of Social Work in 1996. Although a sixty-year resident of the United States, she retained her British citizenship her entire life.
She loved cats, tennis, her home country of England, and travel. She was a devoted fan of the arts, especially the Philadelphia Orchestra where she volunteered and worked part time after her official retirement. She enjoyed attending concerts with her many longstanding friends developed during her decades in Philadelphia.
She embarked on numerous trips overseas including Italy, China, Nepal, Thailand, Tibet, India, Ecuador, Africa and Antarctica. She moved to join family in Virigina in 2018 and she passed away on February 2, 2024.
As a much beloved daughter, sister, aunt, great aunt, and friend she will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
