LaMonte Dale McMichael, 85, passed away peacefully on July 9th in Ashburn, VA. Monte had recently moved back to No. Virginia from Southport, NC to be near his family after the passing of his beloved wife, Barbara in March of 2020.
Monte was born to Mac and Helen McMichael on November 1, 1935 in Benton Harbor, Michigan. He attended the University of New Mexico where he met and married Barbara L. Popp. They had a beautiful marriage that lasted for 62 years. He embarked on a career with the Bureau of Indian Affairs which led to a move to Vienna, VA in 1971 with his family to continue working for the BIA in Washington DC. Upon retiring, Monte worked as a realtor in Northern Virginia before retiring permanently to Southport, NC in 1999.
Monte’s passions included camping, tennis, bowling, boating, coaching both Little League baseball and basketball. In 1987, he obtained his private pilot license which became a hobby that enabled him to fly his family on vacations from Virginia to New Mexico. He also loved playing the saxophone and clarinet with his band members for events in his community of Southport.
Monte is survived by his brother, Donny, his two sons, Kevin (Dora Lee), Cary (Rachel) and adoring grandchildren, Jamie, Aaron, Chad (Lourdes) Brandon and Jacob.
Due to the current health concerns, a combined memorial service for Monte and Barbara will be held in Southport, NC on a date yet to be determined. An announcement will be made at a later date.
