Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Jack Long and Marjorie Parker Long. He was a long-time employee of the Service Source organization and always enjoyed his work there. He was also a member of the Civitan Club. During his life, Joe resided at several group homes affiliated with the Hartwood Foundation. He made many friends among his housemates and staff there, many of whom he considered as family. A strong work ethic, cheerfulness and gentle teasing are the qualities for which Joe was known. He loved to dance, go out to eat and to go bowling. One of his few complete sentences was, “I’m going to win”. In his later years Alzheimer’s Disease curtailed his activities but not his desire to be a friend.
Joe is survived by his sister, Mary Jane Nickolls; his brother, Leon Long; his sister-in-law, Pattigene Long; and his niece, Stephanie Long Romero. All will miss him and remember him fondly.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at Demaine Funeral Home in Fairfax.
In lieu of flowers, the family will ask for donations to go to the Hartwood Foundation.
