Obituary of Joan Hoffman Johnson
Joan Hoffman Johnson, 90, died peacefully after a sudden and brief illness on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. She had been a resident of The Woodlands Retirement Community in Fairfax, Virginia since 2009. She is now reunited with her beloved husband Julian Wayman Johnson, III who preceded her in death in 2011. Julian was her childhood sweetheart whom she married in 1954. She is survived by her daughter, Julie Lynn Johnson, of Reston, her son, Jeffrey Mayette Johnson and wife Brooke Huebner Johnson, of Fairfax, her grandchildren, Joseph Lee Johnson of Woodbridge, Matthew Paul Tabler and wife Kimberly Kay Shumate, of Ashburn, and Kelly Marie Tabler of Smyrna, Georgia, her great-granddaughter Zoey Ann Tabler of Ashburn, her niece & nephew Kimberli Hoffman Bullard and James Mayette Hoffman, of North Carolina, and her cousin Jack Arnold Hoffman, of Reva, VA whom she loved like a brother. She was also preceded in death by her father Mayette Ernest Hoffman, her mother Janice Durrette Hoffman and her brother, Mayette Ernest Hoffman, Jr. Joan was born on March 26, 1933 in Madison, VA. She graduated from Madison County High School in 1950 and received a degree in Library Science from Madison College (now James Madison University) in 1954. She was an elementary school librarian at Clifton and Mosby Woods Elementary Schools. She was a member of Fairfax Baptist Church, where she served as a deacon and worked in the church library. Joan loved traveling with her husband and friends. Memorable trips included a Canadian Rockies train ride and a Mississippi River barge cruise. She was an avid reader and loved working jigsaw puzzles and playing card games. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. A visitation will take place on Tuesday, January 16, at 11 am, followed by a funeral service at 12 pm, and a reception afterwards, all hosted at Demaine Funeral Home (10565 Main St, Fairfax, VA). Private Interment will be at a later date.
