Jean Keatley Nelson, 81, of Fairfax passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at her residence, Fairfax VA. Jean was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1934, grew up in Alexandria, VA, and attended university at Penn State. After graduation she worked as a home economist for VEPCO in Charlottesville, VA and met a handsome engineer named Lou, marrying him in 1960. She took on being a full-time mom and gave that role her energy, love and fun. They later made homes and lifetime friendships in Kettering, MD and Fairfax, VA. She was active for years in the Woman’s Club of Mantua, passionate about anything Penn State, Pittsburgh, nature, cookbooks, elephants and of course her grandkids. She was also known for hosting parties, and for keeping a meticulously landscaped yard. Lou and Jean moved from their home of 36 years in Fairfax to The Gardens Assisted Living in 2012. She took being a friend seriously…whether to her immediate family, cousins, and dear people she collected throughout her life. People remember her as a vibrant, enthusiastic, and outgoing person; full of life. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Louis W. Nelson; her three children Brian Nelson (Dawn), Diane Smyly (Jim) and Kathy Fioramonti (Joe); and her six grandchildren: the 5 Guys of July (Tim, Jimmy, Nathan, Matthew, Duncan) and Sarah, and multiple grand cats and dogs. A memorial service will be held at 10am on Wednesday, June 8 at Floris United Methodist Church. Private interment in Pittsburgh at a later date.
