Jacqueline M. McKavitt, (nee Uber), peacefully passed away on March 6, 2024 in Haymarket, Virginia, surrounded by her family. Born in Paterson, New Jersey, December 21, 1937, she was raised in Glen Rock, NJ by her parents, the late Helen and William Uber. She was a graduate of Ridgewood High and The Catholic University, receiving her B.S. Degree in Nursing in 1959. While in college, she was a member of Theta Phi Alpha sorority and in her senior year was selected to the D.C. Cherry Blossom Festival Queen’s Court. After successfully passing the state board exams in nursing, she was accredited in the states of Florida and New Jersey as well as Washington, D.C.
In 1959, Mrs. McKavitt married her college sweetheart Thomas P. McKavitt, a Naval officer stationed at Pensacola, Florida. She began her nursing career at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola and later worked at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey. In 1966, she left nursing to pursue a career as a stay-at-home mother. She moved numerous times alongside her husband, who held executive management positions in the field of human resources and labor relations. After leaving Pensacola, she resided in Waldwick NJ; Asheville, NC; State College, PA; Atlanta, GA; and Fairfax County, VA. Throughout, Jackie was active in the local garden clubs, gourmet cooking and tole painting.
After her husband's retirement in 2001, they moved to Ocala, Florida, where she spent her time attending plays, operas, symphonies and band concerts. Together, Jackie and Tom enjoyed entertaining friends, playing cards and traveling throughout the U.S., Canada, Caribbean, Europe and the British Isles. She and her husband were avid supporters of the fine arts in Ocala, as well as northern Virginia, after returning in 2016 to be closer to family.
Mrs. McKavitt is survived by her son, Thomas P. McKavitt, Jr. (Cdr. USN, Ret.) (Margaret) of Annapolis, MD; daughter Kathleen A. Thiringer (Peter) of Vienna, VA; and daughter Mary Ann H. East, DMA, (Joe) of Centreville, VA. She was beloved by her grandchildren Pat (Emily), Erin (Tom), Sean (Meaghan), Melissa, Steve, Joe, Helen and Drew. She was also the proud great-grandmother to Charlie, Molly, James, Maggie and Kara. She is also survived by her dear nieces Jenny Kincaid, Liz Rankin and Cate Racek and their families.
She is predeceased by her husband, Thomas P. McKavitt, Sr., her brother William F. Uber, Jr., her sister-in-law Virginia Uber, and her nephew, William F.X. Uber.
The Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel church in Vienna, Virginia on April 26, 2024, at 11:00 AM. A reception will immediately follow the Mass in Desales Hall, adjacent to the church. Inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery will be at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sloan Kettering Cancer Center or The Humane Society.
