Gary was born on January 2, 1943, in San Diego, California, the son of Noel Neil and Leona Thomas Neil, both of whom are deceased. He attended schools in San Diego County, including Casa de Oro Elementary, where he met his future wife, Lynda Rae Deegan. Gary moved with his parents to Whittier, California, during his junior year of high school, and graduated from California High. He attended UCLA and transferred to California State Fullerton, graduating in 1966. He went on to receive a master's degree from Central Michigan University and became a certified public accountant (CPA). Gary joined the Defense Contract Audit Agency, DCAA, in 1966. He was transferred to Northern Virginia with a promotion in 1978. He received several awards for achievements, directed one of the divisions within DCAA, and retired after 32 years, attaining the level of senior executive. After retirement, Gary worked for Deloitte & Touche for almost three years, obtained a real estate license to assist his wife in her business, and became a part-owner and manager of Just Property Management, a property management company. He retired in 2020.
Gary enjoyed getting together with friends for lunch, NASCAR, planting Spring flowers, reading mysteries, music from the 1940s and 1950s, and traveling. With his family, he had been on more than 13 cruises, visiting sites including England, Hawaii, Alaska, the Panama Canal, Italy, Greece, Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Iceland, Spain, and so many more international sites. However, with all these destinations, Disney World and Disneyland, as well as the beaches of South Carolina, were favorites.
Gary is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lynda, daughter, Jennifer, son Jeffrey, 3 grandchildren, Isabella, JT, and Emily, 3 nieces, Kathy, Linda, and Lori, and nephew, Mike.
Services will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10 AM, at 10565 Main St Fairfax, VA 22030 (703) 385-1110 https://www.dignitymemorial.com/ formerly Everly Funeral Home, and now Demaine Funeral Home, followed by burial at Fairfax Memorial Park on Braddock Road.
