On February 16, 2020, Carol Frye Stanley passed away peacefully at the age of 90 at Capital Caring Adler Center in Aldie, Virginia. She was married for sixty-three years to the late John Edwin Stanley who died January 2, 2010. Born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, she was the oldest of six daughters and graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1947. Carol was predeceased by her mother, Beulah Windland Morris and stepfather, Albert Morris; husband, John Edwin Stanley; sisters, Barbara Lee Cronin, Jaqueline Sue Marks, Charlotte Jean Bibbee and Patricia Ann Sebring. She will be missed by her four children, Cathryn Stanley Krebs (Fred) of Fairfax, VA; David Edwin Stanley of Lake of the Woods, VA; Philip Evans Stanley (Lois) of Venice, FL; and Susan Stanley Rathbun (Daniel) of Clifton, VA; her seven grandchildren, Stephen Krebs, Sarah Krebs Smith (Kellen); Elizabeth Carol Oakley (Mike); Brett Stanley, Paul Stanley, John Rathbun, Margaret Rathbun Garbarino (Thomas), and four great-grandchildren, Hadley and Hudson Smith; Abigail and Luke Oakley; her dear sister Rosemary Sheppard (Donald) of Vienna, WV; and many nieces and nephews as well as her special friend, Warren Middlebrook of Locust Grove, VA.
Carol was actively engaged in her children’s lives through PTA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and as a Sunday school teacher at her church. She attended her children’s sports and musical events and was an excellent seamstress. She loved her book club and avidly played tennis until she was eighty years old. Her children and grandchildren have fond memories of family time at the family lake house, “Stantucket.” A volunteer with Hospice and Meals on Wheels, Carol was active in all the communities she lived in and modeled in fashion shows. In Lake of the Woods, VA, she was in the Lioness Club, the Republican Women’s Club and belonged to Lake of the Woods Church, where she served as an usher. When asked what faith meant to her, she responded, “Faith is expressed by being kind, considerate, compassionate, loving and forgiving toward each other.”
A graveside service at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Parkersburg, WV, will be held on May 16, 2020, at 11:00 AM to honor her memory. The family wishes to thank The Gardens, Fairfax, VA, and Capital Caring Adler Center, Aldie, VA, for their excellent staffs and care.
