After growing up in Grand Rapids and La Crosse, Wisconsin, and St. Louis, Missouri, he graduated from La Crosse Central High School, then attended the University of Northern Colorado where he received a BA in Business Administration and Economics and an MA in Public Administration. In 1961, Alan married Carol Eileen Shiery in Greeley, CO and the young couple moved to Washington, D.C. He served one year in the US Army in Ft. Riley, Kansas when his reserve unit was activated for the Berlin Crisis. While finishing reserve duty, Alan worked for the U.S. Civil Service Commission. In 1964, they were sent to Saipan, in the Mariana Islands, to set up the Trust Territory, and their daughter, Heather, was born. Often Alan would preach in the local church, delivering sermons received from their fathers, Fred Hyslop and Floyd Shiery, both ordained ministers. Alan remembered their time on the island vividly and with great affection, sparking a lifelong love of travel. The couple toured the world in 1966, leaving Heather with her Hyslop grandparents in Hawaii. They returned to the U.S. in 1967, and were stationed at Fort Huachuca, AZ, where their son, Douglas, was born. They moved to Aurora, CO for three years before the family settled in northern Virginia in 1976. At his retirement, Alan was recognized for 35 years of service in the Department of the Army and commended for exemplary performance. Alan was a member of Sydenstricker United Methodist Church for over forty years. He loved learning about his Scottish heritage, traveling to Scotland, and attending the Virginia Scottish Games.
