It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Scott Michener. Mike passed away peacefully on the evening of June 12, 2021 in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family. Mike fought a courageous, decade-long battle with cancer. Mike was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many.
Mike was born on January 26, 1955 in Whittier, CA to Wilma Irene Michener and Robert Edwin Michener. Robert and Wilma moved the family to Mammoth Lakes, CA in 1964. This is where Mike lived an idyllic childhood, but also learned his lifelong value for hard work. Mike, along with his family, spent their time working the family business of the Pine Cliff Lodge, but never missed an opportunity to fish during the summer months and ski during the winter. He developed his love for sports, the outdoors, and many life-long friends here in Mammoth Lakes. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, basketball and baseball - which carried through his entire life. The LA Dodgers and Gonzaga Bulldogs were some of his all time favorite sports teams. After graduating from California Polytechnic, San Luis Obispo in 1978 Mike moved to the Sacramento area where he met and married Sharon, his wife of thirty nine years and had two daughters, Kristen and Jackie. Mike was a successful entrepreneur and businessman, owning an insurance brokerage for over forty years before selling it in 2019 and later retiring. Mike's success stemmed from something few have, but many desire: integrity. He has been described by many as a friend first and business associate second because he never placed his goals ahead of the goals of those he served, no matter what the situation. In addition to his professional career, Mike was an active member of the Holy Family School community. He devoted over 16 years to coaching youth basketball as well as serving on the school board in many roles, including president.
Of all the roles he played, the roles that made him the most happy and proud were that of husband, father, and grandfather in his later life. Mike was relentlessly devoted to his family and played an active role in all of their lives. He was present at every event, always as the biggest cheerleader and supporter. Mike loved to travel the world, but his favorite place to come back to was always Hawaii. But it was not only the travel that he loved - it was the time spent making memories with his wife, children, and grandchildren that made each trip so special. While Mike was sick for many years, his family and friends admired his ability to remain positive and live life to the fullest, even in the darkest of days.
Mike is survived by his wife, Sharon: daughters, Kristen (Michener) Fritts, Jackie Michener: son-in-law, Jeff Fritts; grandchildren, Mason and Sadie Fritts, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Wilma Michener, his sister Robin (Michener) Fernandez and brother Jon Michener.
The funeral mass to honor him will be held at 10am, Friday, August 6, 2021 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Citrus Heights, CA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to “Sutter Roseville Medical Center Foundation” in honor of him. The family would like to specifically thank the Sutter Oncology Department for their dedicated treatment and care throughout the years.
