Lars Ostlund was born in Boras, Sweden, on August 15, 1937, the son of Ake and Sigrid. While growing up, Lars had many jobs. For example, errand boy for a butcher, door-to-door newspaper sales. When he was 15 years old, he worked on a ship that hauled lumber between Sweden and England. Thereafter, he served 2 years in the Swedish military.
Lars emigrated to Sacramento from Sweden in 1960 with his first wife Iris and her three siblings. Iris had aunts and uncles living in Sacramento. In Sacramento, Lars worked as an iron worker on many local and statewide projects building bridges, high rises, and other infrastructure projects. He was an iron worker for 35 years until he retired.
In 1965, Lars purchased 5 acres in Elk Grove and built the home he shared with Iris and their two children. After Iris’ death in 1989, he married Birgitta Andersson, a longtime family friend. Lars was active in the Swedish Lodge, an avid golfer, and a thrifty man who loved to go to flea markets to find the best deal. Lars also enjoyed painting as a hobby.
Lars Ostlund is survived by his loving wife of 29 years Birgitta; children: David and Ann (Hulsey), Nils, Mindy, and Tammy; grandchildren: Courtney, Kyle, Austin, Emily, Erik, Kristin, Daniel, Lance, David, and Lisa; and four great-grandchildren.
