June Rebecca Smalley Eskew was born on her family’s farm near Osage, Iowa on July 26, 1924, the second to the youngest of ten children (one boy and nine girls) of Harrison Hobert and Nellie Catherine (Kirgus) Smalley. Her parents farmed their farm until 1932 and then they moved to Minnesota where her dad worked for the Austin Street Department until his retirement after injuries from an automobile accident.
June grew up in Austin, Minnesota and moved to Chicago, Illinois in her late teens to be close to her sister, Blanche and her family. There she worked in a candy factory and a factory that riveted airplane parts. In 1949 she then followed Blanche and husband Clarence to Sacramento, CA where she resided until her recent health problems. In Sacramento she worked at Campbell Soup and then in her later years she did In Home Health Care.
June is survived by her four children, Sheila Dorlene Amundson of Rancho Cordova, CA; Rollen Thomas Eskew of Vallejo, CA; Richard Charles Eskew of San Luis Obispo, CA and Harrison Hobert Eskew of Sacramento, CA and stepson Bud Eskew of Pennsylvania. She is the beloved grandmother of Sherri Lyn Chamberlain, Bonnie Louise Williams, Terri Lee Shelby, Amanda Cathrine Amundson, Thomas Jennings Amundson (Vanessa), Richard Thomas Eskew, Zachary Kane Eskew, Kandice Dawn Johnson (Cornelius), Cody Thomas Eskew and Sierra Brooke Zafra; great grandmother of Derek Eugene Chamberlain, Hailey Leeann Kohler (Zachary), Thomas Justice Roufs, Austin Jennings Amundson, Joshua Adam Eskew Doubek, Lillian Rose Welbourn, Paityn Tome’ Amundson, Kaitlynn Eliana Creed, Hunter Jennings Amundson, Annabel Renee Zafra and Addilyn Grace Zafra; great great grandmother of Isaiah Domonique Lawrence Jr., Luke Budge, Maddilynn Celeste Smith, Kaycee Leeann Kohler, Josiah Christian Johnson and Skylar Glen Kohler. Also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and many generations of great nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Preceded in death by her parents, Harrison and Nellie Smalley; husband Rollen Eskew and longtime companion George Marks; siblings Harvey Smalley, Burnice Wilder, Beulah Jenkins, Bertha Graff, Blanche Cottingham, Beryl Mielke, Bessie Miller, Ruby Davis, Dorothy Lamaack; stepdaughter Wanda Lou Chamberlain; grandchildren Kristi Leeann Creed, Joshua Moon Eskew, Amber Rebecca Marie Eskew, Adam Joshua Eskew and son-in-law Clifford Jennings Amundson Jr..
