Helen Marie was born to Josephine Wallace and Victor Stewart on May 15, 1930 at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. As a young girl growing up in Brooklyn, Helen was a bright light who was very popular, kind, and loyal to her friends. Helen had a mischievous streak as she and her young friends would sneak into movie theatres and clubs to watch her favorite movies and live artists such as Duke Ellington, The Ink Spots, and Ella Fitzgerald perform.
Helen married Edward James, the love of her life in June of 1951. This union produced seven children. They were married 42 years and traveled to many parts of the world as Edward was a US Air Force veteran. Helen leaves behind her beloved family to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy of kindness and service. She also leaves seven children; Edward with loving wife Chantal James, Deborah, Duane with loving wife of 32 years, Kathy James, Ericka with loving husband William Deveraux, Mark, Karin, and Michael, eight grandchildren; Robert, Anthony, Lynett, Paul, Chevonne, Eric, Cecile, and Tatiana, and seven great grandchildren; Tyler, Joshua, Jordan, Jordan, Dalilah, Devin, and Kaylee.
Helen was best known for her kindness, her great generosity, and her caring and sweet nature. Helen was devoted to many causes in her life working with those who were less fortunate than herself. Helen always put the needs of others first and she never seemed to have a bad day. Her bright personality was as sweet as a long, beautiful summer day and it was her absolute love and devotion to her family and friends that she will be most remembered for.
Helen is preceded in death by her precious mother, Josephine Wallace, and former husband, Edward James. Helen’s passing means those who have crossed her path are left with a little less laughter and love. Her sweet memory will live on as a beautiful treasure in our hearts and minds.
