On Thursday, October 15th, 2020, Gary S. Gilbert, PhD passed away in Fair Oaks California at the age of 72. Gary was born on April 8th, 1948 in Brooklyn, NY to Lewis and Esther Gilbert. Gary grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Sheepshead Bay High School. He studied Psychology at the State University of New York New Paltz and went on to Kansas State University for his doctorate. He did a Doctoral Internship in Clinical Psychology at the Medical University of South Carolina and spent a year at Swedish University. He also served in the US Merchant Marines. Gary eventually settled in Northern California where he had his psychology practice “Bridge Street Psychology” for over 20 years.
Gary was preceded in death by his father Lewis and his son Joshua. He is survived by his mother Esther, wife Barri, daughters Jennifer and Ann-lise, step-children Michael and Rebecca, and siblings Michael and Debbi. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; Sam, Max, Zoey, Adam, Noah, Ari, Eliza, and Ian.
Gary was quick witted, silly, and hilarious at times. He was generous, thoughtful, and cared deeply for his family. Gary loved cooking healthy meals, he loved seafood and would never turn down a lobster. Gary was a devoted fan of the Atlanta Braves and Sacramento Kings no matter how many times they lost. Gary loved spending time in his backyard and swimming in his pool in Fair Oaks. He always maintained a positive outlook, even when times were difficult and his health caused him pain. Gary was complicated, dynamic, and very loving. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 27th, 2020 at the Fair Oaks Cemetery District at 1 o’clock pm. In lieu of flowers, Gary’s family asks that donations be sent to the National Alliance on Mental Illness or The Parkinson’s Foundation in his honor.
