Fred was born February 4th 1931 on the family farm in Wheatland, Wyoming. He had fiery red hair, green eyes, and an impish grin. Before entering the Army he was a telephone lineman. While in the Army he contracted polio and was confined to a wheelchair in 1951. However, nothing seemed to stop him. He was the first president of the Paralyzed Veterans of America – Rocky Mountain Chapter where he organized fishing and bowling tournaments for paralyzed veterans. They awarded him a lifetime achievement award in 2006. Fred loved serving the Lord by tutoring students, ushering at his church, and he ran a multi-church food ministry for many years. When he stepped down as director in 2010 he continued to work once a week at the ministry.
In 1982, he married the love of his life, Marcia Lynn Brittain Hoy Christensen, a dark haired, blue-eyed beauty after they met at the Sunrise Community Church in Fair Oaks. They enjoyed traveling in their motor home, visiting with friends, and serving their church. She made a beautiful home for them and decorated it with her extraordinary talents in the form of painting, embroidery, ceramics, and sewing. She shared Fred’s love of community service by teaching Bible study groups and especially loved her time crafting unique items with her women’s group called “The Sew-n-Sews.” Marcia was born in 1935 in Kansas and was married to her first husband, Walter Allen Hoy, Jr., from 1954 until his death in 1981. She preceded Fred in death after a courageous battle with cancer on December 16th 2011.
Fred leaves a daughter, Darla Throckmorton, her husband, Paul, and four children Jimmy, Crystal, Kaytlyn, and Levi; sister Agnes Miller, brother Gordon Christensen; stepdaughter Kathy Scharf and her husband Tom, son Jason, and granddaughter Maliyah; stepson Robert Hoy; and stepson Richard Hoy, his wife Tari, daughter Amy, and grandson Eddie; daughters Judy Roberts, Tina Saldana, Suzanne Wilson, and sons John Christensen and James Christensen. He was preceded in death by his parents Christopher and Lelia and brothers Art, Harold, and Herbert.
