Elsie was born to Gertrude Hollie Wiederman and Perry St.Claire DeWeese on July 31, 1925. Following her into the DeWeese family were brothers (d.) Perry DeWeese and (d.) Bill DeWeese. Her formative years were marked by The Great Depression, a decade of battling severe national poverty. She developed Undulant fever at 16 but after recovering sher worked in the Portland, Oregon shipyards during WWII. Elsie was a brave and hard worker, favoring working the Crow's Nest and deep bowels of the ship.
In Portland, she met and fell in love with (d.) Robert (Clyde) Fisher, Lt. JG in the Merchant Marines. Elsie and Clyde married June 24, 1945; he only had a few days on land before he was shipped out again but they managed to have a small wedding. Once the war was over, they enjoyed a train honeymoon across the United States. They eventually settled in Northern California. Through the years, 4 children were born into the Fisher family and half-sister Judy made it 5. In 1958, Elsie worked nights as a Nurse's Aide, which allowed her to be home with her children during the day. Elsie and Clyde went back to school together and earned their diplomas in 1964. She then enrolled in Santa Rosa Jr. College to earn her Vocational Nursing License. As an LVN and a very successful Avon representative, Elsie made many lasting friendships during this time. Their home in Middle Rincon Road became a hub for friends and family. Elsie and Clyde both loved entertaining, camping, boating and fishing.
Eventually due to her husband's health conditions, she retired from Memorial Hospital in Santa Rosa and they moved to Silver Springs, Nevada, creating an oasis in the high desert. Elsie and Clyde's mothers both lived with them in their golden years. After her husband's passing in 1990, she lived in Reno, then Colfax, eventually settling in Sacramento where her oldest daughter helped her through her later years.
Elsie leaves behind her living children Kathy (Donald) Bridges and Darrold (Terri) Fisher. She's also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Elsie was predeceased by her children Bob Fisher, Tamara Lynch and Judy Ellison.
A celebration of Life for Elsie will be held Thursday, January 25, 2024 from 11am-12pm at Mt. Vernon Memorial Park located at 8201 Greenback Lane in Fair Oaks, California. In lieu of flowers the family requests you make a donation to Kaiser's Hospice program.
