Dorothy Knight passed away on Nov. 15, 2021 in Sacramento at the age of 100. She was born in Luton, Iowa to Thomas and Jennie Calhoun. She precedes in death is her husband Loren Knight for 69 years, her bothers Fred, Don, Richard & Roger her sister Irene Fiel and a nephew Stephen Jensen.
Survived by her sister Charlotte Jensen of Gumming, Utah, her three daughters Shirley Wilkerson, Roberta (Robie) Waledon (Jack), & Barbara Knight. Grand children, John, Robert and David Ramm, Christine Muran, Cathy Hanna, Troy & Tim Darling, 8 great grandchildren & 8 great, great grandchildren (& several nieces and nephews).
When she was six years old her family decided to move to Sacramento. For a few months, then they moved to Hercules where her dad worked at the Powder plant. She went to grammar school in Pinole, CA ‘til the third grade. Then the family decided to move back to Luton, Iowa and Sotx City, Iowa ‘til she graduated from high school in 1938. She played the clarinet in the marching band while attending school there. Then the family moved back to Sacramento. She thought it would be easier to meet kids her age by going to Great Union High School with her siblings.
She took post-grad classes for a semester and graduated again in 1939. One of her brother’s friends introduced her to her future husband at a church function. She worked at the unemployment office that was on 13th K St for a short time. She married Loren Knight in 1941 then started a family. They moved to several places but ended up in South Sacramento, (Elk Grove Unified School district) around 1945. They lived on Hedge Avenue most of the time.
She was a charter member of Friere Missionary Baptist Church since 1946. She was a piano player, Sunday school teacher, church clerk & assisted her husband being a treasurer. She was a Chauffer to several bible camps, also a chauffeur for her daughter’s 4-H functions for 9 years.
She was a cook’s helpers at Sierra Enterprise Grammar School form 1945 to 1962.
She attended Sacramento City College for one year taking a typing class when one of her younger daughters attended classes there. Approximately 1976 she attended Consumes Junior College for 2 years. She received the Dean’s Highest Honor and graduated in the spring of 1978 with an AA Degree in music and art.
She loved gardening and crafts of many kinds, and cared for her grandchildren.
She was a wonderful & lovely wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother & great-great grandmother. She always said she was awnry, we say stubborn.
She will be greatly missed by all she knew, everyone that met her loved her.
