Betty Ann Lane

Fred Rubino, former local Superintendent of the mails, in Torrington, Connecticut County of Litchfield. Betty

Graduated valedictorian from Torrington High School in 1935. She was the class historian, editor-in-chief of the

Class book, and secretary of the dramatic society. Betty continued her education by attending Monmouth College

in Monmouth, lllinois. She was a member of KAPPA DELTA Sorority, lettered in three sports, was a member of the

National Collegiate Players, was named to the staff of the Oracle, Monmouth's college publication. She graduated

from Monmouth College Magna Cum Laude on June 6th 1939 with a bachelor of arts in mathematics and minors in

French and English. She was the organist at the commencement exercise and the organist at the Baccalaureate

Service After graduation she accepted a position to teach mathematics and English, coach dramatics, and take

charge of the Glee club at Bath-Lynchburg Community High School Bath, lllinois (July 1,1939-June 30,1942). Betty

moved back to Torrington where she taught general physics, algebra, plane geometry, and aviation (to the pilots

going to war) at Torrington High School and Adult Evening School from 1942-1945.

On Nov 18, 1944 she married Capt. Thomas Stanley Lane (United States Army Air Corps) in Torrington, CT. Betty took a break from teaching to start her family. Her husband's military career took them to places like Newfoundland, Alabama, and Texas. While at Webb AFB, Texas, Betty played the organ at the base chapel for all the weddings and pilot training class graduations. She went back to teaching and taught math in the Big Spring

Public Schools from 1957-1961.

On July 31, 1961 they left the Air Force after 20 plus years, moving back to Lockport, Illinois. Betty again accepted a teaching position at Lockport Township High School where she taught, for 25 years, all levels of math including accelerated algebra and trigonometry classes. She served as sponsor of the cheerleaders, Glee Club, served as a Math Club sponsor, and assisted with drama productions (1963-1988).

During her years of teaching at LTHS, Betty continued to improve her position by going back to school to get her Master of Science in Education from Northern lllinois University in August 1966. She continued to work on her education but stopped just short of her PHD. She had a Masters plus 30 when she retired from teaching in 1988. Betty was also very involved with her church, the United Methodist Church of Lockport which she joined on April 7, 1963. She was in the choir and substituted as the organist whenever needed. Betty moved to Sacramento in 1998. Betty passed away peacefully February 24, 2011 from pneumonia in Roseville, California with her family at her side.

She is preceded in death by Tom, her husband of 33 years. She leaves behind her son Thomas Bruce Lane, and his wife Peggy, of Sacramento, C A, and her son, Lance Robert Lane, and his wife, Pam Cantelmi, also of Sacramento, as well as three grandsons, Alexander D., Adam T., and Andrew R. Lane and two granddaughters, Dana Hilldale and her husband Phil of Raleigh, NC and Brandi Leger and her husband Nick of Ft. Eustis, VA, as well as 5 great grandchildren. Betty will join her husband in burial at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia.
