He was born to John Edgar and Sarah Belle Jacobs on May 29, 1922 in Chalmers, Indiana. He graduated from Hammond High School, Hammond, IN in 1940. He married Betty Lou Routien on Oct. 18, 1940, who preceded him in death on May 7, 1997. He was a WWII veteran and served in the 3rd Infantry Division as a Machine Gunner on the front lines in Germany and France from July 1944 to Feb. of 1946 and was awarded the Bronze star for bravery. He was a master machinist, working first for Wright Machine Co. in Layfayette, IN and RR Donnelleys in Crawfordsville, IN before moving to the Sacramento area in 1961. Here, he worked as a supervisor ay Libby McNeil and Libby as was also the chief of the Libby fire Brigade. He retired in 1998 from Cable Data (now known as DST). After retirement, he was a partner in Fogbank Industrial Arts that did contract work for the Queen Mary.
Bernard is survived by 4 children, Judith Starnes and Patricia Sowers of Crawfordsville, IN, Harold (Jon) Jacobs of Antelope, CA and Robin (Rob) Jacobs of Rancho Cordova, CA, 7 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be from 4-8pm Friday Feb. 24, 2012 at Mount Vernon Mortuary, 8201 Greenback Ln., Fair Oaks, CA 95628. Services will be 1pm Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 also at Mount Vernon.
