March 20, 1927 - August 19, 2024
Axel (Al) Bernt Johansson, born in International Waters on March 20, 1927, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family.
He is survived by his brother, Magna Johansson; his daughters, Alexis and Pam; his son, Connor; and his grandchildren, Marcus, Jamie, and Nic Whitehead. He will also be deeply missed by many friends.
Al was a strong and intelligent man with a passion for adventure and lifelong learning. He was raised in Sweden and graduated at the customary age of 15. Shortly after, he joined the Merchant Marines, serving for over 13 years throughout World War II and the Korean conflict.
After his service, Al settled in San Francisco, where he attended John O’Connell's School of Carpentry at night while apprenticing during the day for two years. He became a dedicated member of the Northern California Carpenters Union, where he worked proudly for 33 years, forming lifelong bonds with his fellow Union brothers and sisters.
Al later moved to Sacramento for a job opportunity, where he met the love of his life, Barbara. They eventually purchased a home in Orangevale, where they raised their children and where Al lived for over 50 years.
Al will be reunited with his beloved wife, Barbara, at Mount Vernon Cemetery on August 27th.
His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
