He will also be missed by his sister Norma Sullivan, nieces Dorothy (Brent) Biggar, Lynn (Frank) Mucci, and nephews Ross (Ingrid) Sullivan, Robert (Lynette) Lawrence, and Douglas (Diana Masiero) Lawrence. Alfred was predeceased by his loving wife of 68 years Florence M Lawrence, his parents Percival and Jessie Lawrence, his brother Allan Lawrence and his grandson Alex Lawrence.
Al was born and grew up in Montreal, Canada. As a youth he participated in the Boy Scouts, graduated from the High School of Montreal and was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. As a young man, he followed with three years in the Royal Canadian Air Force Reserves. While still in his teens, he met his future wife Florence M Townsend at a church camp and they were married a few years later on June 14, 1952 at Erskine and American United Church. The newlyweds settled in Town of Mount Royal as Alfred embarked on a career in telephone communications at Bell Telephone of Canada while extending his education through night courses at Sir George Williams University. The family grew quickly to include Don, Bob and Linda and in 1963, the choice was made to relocate the family to Sacramento California where Al continued his work in communications at Pacific Telephone. Soon after the move Rick was born and the family moved once more, finally settling in San Jose. Al continued to work at Pacific Telephone in San Francisco until his retirement in 1983. Not one to sit idle he continued to work off and on during his retirement as a communications consultant to multiple Silicon Valley firms for several more years.
He loved travel, skiing, hiking and camping. Most family vacations were comprised of loading the kids and camping equipment into the station wagon and heading out across the country, or to yet another state or national park during the summer. Winter always included ski trips to the Sierras. Post retirement, travel also included trips to Hawaii, Maine, British Columbia, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Eastern Canada.
Al will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his wife, love and support for his family, his work ethic and the value he placed on giving back to the community through his Elks Club membership, his years serving as a deacon at Pilgrim Congregational Church, and his years leading Boy Scout Troop 207 as Scoutmaster.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Eskaton Village Assisted Living for their care, support and compassion.
Funeral arrangements are private and entrusted to Mount Vernon Memorial Park and Mortuary, 8201 Greenback Lane, Fair Oaks, CA 95628.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice in Alfred’s name will be very much appreciated.
