Geraldine Yvonne Jones

Geraldine received her elementary diploma in 1948 from the Archdiocese of Chicago, Illinois Technical School. She graduated from DuSable High School in 1952.

Shortly after high school, Geraldine married Robert Jones, Sr. to that union, five children were born; Robert Jr, Steve, Kenneth, Sharron and Ronald. Geraldine and her family were stationed in Europe and other countries abroad due to her husband’s military assignments where she experienced exposure to different cultures.

After returning back to the States, Geraldine focused her attention on her education. She studied at Kennedy King College and received her Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Arts in 1976 from Olive Harvey College. In December of 1978, she graduated from Chicago State University with her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. In 1981, Geraldine earned her Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Illinois Circle Campus in Chicago. Geraldine was an academic scholar, maintaining honors on the Dean’s list, and obtaining multiple Illinois State Certifications. In her career, Geraldine worked as a Student Aid Clerk, and then as a Social Worker. She worked many years as a Pediatrics Social Worker at the Cook County Hospital. Geraldine became a widow in 1985. Before retiring in 1995, Geraldine spent many years devoted as a Social Worker for the Chicago Board of Education.

During the late 80’s, Geraldine met the second love of her life, Charles “Chuck” Thomas. Chuck and Geraldine enjoyed a great life; they enjoyed entertaining, cooking, traveling and celebrating life.

Everyone knew Geraldine to be a jazzy woman; she loved music. She loved to entertain and feed people. Family and friends were always welcome to her home; but everyone also knew she would tell you like it is. She spoke her mind unapologetically. Although she loved everyone; she did not enjoy hugs and kisses. She was one of a kind and will be sorely missed.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Inez; father, Samuel; sons Kenneth A. Jones, Steven Jones, Robert Jones. Jr., Ronald Jones and special cousin Dr. William “Junebug” Sommerville.

Geraldine Y. Jones departed this life peacefully on July 26, 2016.

Geraldine leaves to cherish sweet memories a loving and devoted daughter, Sharron Denise Jones; two sisters, Amy Jones (Malcolm), Mary Stewart-Woody (Ronnie), one brother, John Davidson; grandchildren, Monique (William) Jones-Carter, Tasha Jones, Kenrod Jones, Kenneth Smith, and Tiffany Smith; great-grandchildren, Jason Boyd Porter, Jr., Curtis Johnson, Jr. and Christopher Johnson; nieces Kenyatta Woody and Inez Woody; nephew, Jerome Woody, Jr.; a special cousin/friend, Shirley Moore, a special friend Barbara Jones (Leroy), cousin Phillip Somerville, LeRoy Crump, and surrogate sons, Tyrone and LaMarcus Powell, and a host of other family and friends.
