Sue Kassionas Long was born July 9, 1924 in Everett, Washington. She died September 13, 2022 in the Augustae family home in Mukilteo. She woke up that morning, had a little breakfast, chatted briefly with her caregivers and then laid her head on her pillow and quietly changed her address from earth to heaven.
She lived a good long life full of family, friends and her church, Trinity Lutheran, for more than 70 years. Sue met Bob Long at the roller rink when she was 15 and along with many other local teenagers spent much of her free time skating and competing with the Rollicking Rollers.
In March, 1943, Bob and Sue were married and bought a little house in Everett for $2000. Bob enlisted in the Navy and before he shipped out and Sue was pregnant with their daughter, Barbara. When Bob returned from active duty in 1945 he went to work as an apprentice at Judd and Black electric and retired in 1986. Mom and dad were able to see the world with all of their appliance friends courtesy of Judd and Black. And mom made sure all of her grandkids were able to go to Disneyland with grandma and grandpa.
Bob and Sue raised 3 kids. Barbara Sue born in 1944, Robert Forbes born in 1947 and William Stewart born in 1950. Barb, Bob, and Bill enlarged the family with 8 grandkids and families, 10 great grands and 3 great, great grands. Sue was in heaven with all those little babies to love, hold and shop for!
Grandma and Grandpa Kassionas owned a little fishing resort on Tyee Beach on Camano Island and nearly every weekend mom would load up the car including diapers when Bill came along and headed for the resort where dad joked that it was his second job and he hauled boats and motors down the carriage to the beach and all of us spent a lot of time beachcombing, crabbing, fishing off the dock or going way out for Salmon. We were a very lucky family to have all of that available to us. Mom spent nearly every summer teaching all the kids and beach kids how to water ski, but she never wanted to go. We finally convinced her to go and she said only one time. She went around in a big circle, landed perfectly at the shore and said "I am never doing this again and don't ever ask!" Every year for over 20 years, they hosted a family reunion at the beach and it was so successful and helped us get to know our cousins we didn't get to see very often because they live too far away.
Both of our parents were very generous with their time and money in the community. Mom was a cub scout den mother, a very active PTA person, delivered dozens of home made cookies to classrooms. She made bags and bags of peanut brittle for the church bazaar every year. And everyone who knocked on her door looking for a handout she helped - especially in her younger years. She gave money to all the local charities and our parent's generosity to the community instilled in her children the satisfaction of helping others.
Funeral service will be Saturday, September 24th at 11:00 at Evergreen Funeral Home, 4504 Broadway, Everett, WA 98203. The family will host a light lunch in the gathering room after the service. All friends and family are invited. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to send donation to Trinity Lutheran Church 2324 Lombard Everett, WA 98201.
