Roderick William Black, a devoted husband, esteemed educator, and faithful member of the community, passed away on June 26, 2023, in Everett, Washington. He was born on September 29, 1937, in Portland, Oregon, and spent his life dedicated to his family, his faith, and his passion for education.
Roderick attended Franklin High School in Portland, Oregon, where he graduated in 1956. He then pursued higher education, earning both a bachelor's and master's degree in Education, the former from the University of Oregon in 1964, and the latter from the University of North Dakota in 1975. Roderick served in the Navy from June 12, 1956, to June 17, 1958, working as a seaman. During his military service, he proudly joined the "Domain of Neptunia Rex" on the last voyage of the USS Albany.
After completing his naval service, Roderick became a science teacher at Rainer Union High School in Rainer, Oregon, from 1964 to 1968. He then relocated to Yuma, Arizona, where he taught at Yuma Union High School for over 20 years. His dedication extended beyond the classroom, as he also coached track and supported all other sports at Yuma High. Roderick faithfully attended Friday night football games, cheering on the students whom he guided both academically and athletically.
In addition to his teaching career, Roderick worked part-time with the Bureau of Land Management from 1983 to 1991, further showcasing his commitment to serving others and his community. He was a cherished member, deacon, and elder at 1st Presbyterian Church in Yuma, Arizona, where he actively shared his faith in Jesus for decades.
Roderick's interests were diverse and reflected his love for nature and music. He was an avid listener of the "Jazz Straight Ahead" radio show on KAWC and treasured his membership with the Audubon Society. Each year, he eagerly participated in the annual bird counts, exemplifying his deep appreciation for the world's natural wonders.
In December 1966, Roderick united in marriage with Nancy Jean Black (née Maier) in Rainer, Oregon. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Roderick is preceded in death by his sister, Judith Anderson, in 2001. He is survived by his loving wife Nancy, their children Jacob Black and his wife Meri, Jessica Timm (née Black) and her husband Steve, and Josiah "Hank" Black and his partner Ana Frutos. Roderick's siblings Terry Black and Jackie Brouwer also mourn his passing. He leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Jacob Black, Quinn Oster, Brendan Black, Julia Timm, and Rex Timm, who will forever hold his memory dear.
To honor Roderick's memory, a memorial service will be held in Yuma, Arizona, in the fall of 2023, providing an opportunity for family and friends to come together and celebrate his remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Audubon Society or to KAWC, the radio station at Arizona Western College, both of which were causes near and dear to Roderick's heart.
Rod and Nancy embarked on countless cross-country journeys each summer, relishing the freedom of the open road and forging unforgettable memories along the way. Roderick's genuine love for exploration and his zest for life will forever be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
