Robert Luther Modrell, 79, died unexpectedly and quietly at home on Tuesday, September 18, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gearldine “Geri” Modrell, and their three children: Robert James Modrell, Catherine Jean Leybourne Modrell, and Thomas Matthew Modrell. He has five grandchildren: Timothy and Alyssa Modrell, Jessica Leybourne Wright and Michael Leybourne, and Jonathan “Jack” Modrell. He has one great grandchild, Ava Wright and his half-brother, Sam Schille.
Robert was raised in Everett by his mother and stepfather, Milford and Esther Schille, both deceased. After serving a tour in the Navy, Robert met and married the love of his life, Geri Stegner. They were married at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and were among the founding members of St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Everett, where they raised their children and supported their activities with strong interest and personal involvement. Robert was a Boy Scout leader and seldom missed any game in which his children were involved—basketball, soccer, volleyball, etc.—all while never missing a day’s work at The Boeing Co., from which he retired after more than 40 years of service and several awards for perfect attendance. He provided love in Christ and taught his children the meaning of hard work, integrity, honor, and what it means to take care of those you love. One of his greatest joys was the memory of camping with his four adult grandchildren when they were growing up, and then camping with the 10-year-old for the last few years. He especially enjoyed this last summer with Jack and all the memories.
Robert was a member of the Knights of Columbus during his entire adult life, serving in various positions, including Grand Knight. He was also an Elk and an Eagle and volunteered for St. Vincent DePaul for many years.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 25, from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. at Purdy & Walters with Cassidy.
His life will be honored with Mass and services at St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Everett on Saturday, September 29, 10:00 a.m., the day after his 79th birthday.
Please send no flowers. Honorariums to the St. Mary Magdalen School would be greatly appreciated, as it was one of Robert’s major interests—and it’s tax deductible (his gift to you even as he passes on to our Lord!).
