He leaves his loving wife, Jean (Hubbard) Helm of 62 years, daughter Aletha (Mark) Riter, son N. Scott (Jana) Helm, granddaughters, Kata Helm, Melea Helm and Nellie Helm. He also leaves a brother-in-law William H (Monica) Hubbard of Bradenton FL; step-mother Juanita Helm, half- brother Larry Helm, aunts Rose Wheeler, Doris(Willie) Hayes and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He graduated from Monroe High school in 1948.
Norm contracted polio as a student at Everett Community College in 1949, but never allowed it to govern his life. He worked productively as a Safeway Store employee for 52 years, from age 12, during WW II, until his retirement in 1995.He received several commendations for long and faithful service to his company. Norm and Jean were married on June 10,1951, on Jean's parents, Scott and Nell Hubbard's 35th wedding anniversary. They met while Jean was a student nurse at Everett General Hospital. He and Jean made their first home in Snohomish, Wa. where they lived for 17 years until they built a larger home, north of town in 1968. As a family we enjoyed traveling back east to visit my brother Bill and his family in Ohio at that time two different times, flew to be with them at their home in Florida for their 40th wedding anniversary and how we flew to Honolulu for a family reunion in 1972 and also how much he enjoyed our summer time camping trips on the Stillaguamish or the ocean every opportunity we had. Norm was very active in the Snohomish Kiwanis Club, being a charter member, club secretary for many years, a past president and also a Lt Governor of the district twice. In 1997, they sold their home and moved to the Smokey Point area to share acreage with their son and his family. Norm's major enjoyment was his family and his home. He loved remodeling their first home with "Verner's help" and again in 1968 "with Verner's help he started from the ground up. He enjoyed putting in the lawns, chopping wood for the fireplaces. After retirement, he and Jean enjoyed several years of traveling in their motorhome, reaching all states west of the Mississippi except Colorado, making friends along the way. He treasured outings with the Rainier Holiday Ramblers#102. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church at North Lakewood. He will be missed by all who knew him for his humor and his smile.
Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 17th, at Faith Lutheran Church - North Lakewood, 1424 172ND ST NE, Marysville WA 98271.
