With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Mai Xiong Moua, who departed this world on March 19, 2025, at the age of 102. Surrounded by love until her final breath, she leaves behind a legacy of warmth, strength, and grace, and will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her.
Mai was born on December 3, 1922, in Xieng Khouang, Laos. Orphaned at a young age, she was lovingly adopted by Ntsuab Kos and Maiv Yaj Xiong, becoming part of a large and caring family.
She later married Chia Chue Moua, and together they had nine children: Chong Vue (passed), Xai (passed), Dang, Chee, Phia (passed), Ge (passed), and Xa (passed). Two of their children, however, passed away in infancy and were never named. Of the nine, only four survived into adulthood. After becoming a widow, Mai bravely raised her children on her own.
Despite having no formal education and limited resources, Mai persevered through every challenge with strength and determination. Her resilience carried her across continents as she pursued the promise of the American dream. In 1985, she migrated to the United States after the Vietnam War and was reunited with her son, Dang, and daughter-in-law, See. She lived with them and their children until her passing.
She is survived by her son, Dang; daughter, Chee; 29 grandchildren; and 50 great-grandchildren.
Mai found joy in the peaceful rhythm of country life—raising chickens, ducks, and pigeons, planting vegetables, farming, and stitching paj ntaub (traditional Hmong embroidery). Above all, she loved and cared deeply for her family, devoting a part of her life watching over her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She had a way of making everyone feel seen and acknowledged—offering a nod, a smile, or a few kind words whenever she crossed paths with someone. While we grieve her passing, we find comfort in knowing that her legacy of resilience and love lives on in all of us.
A traditional Hmong funeral will be held on Friday, April 25th, 2025, from 8:00 AM to midnight at Evergreen Funeral Home (4505 Broadway, Everett, WA 98203). Services will continue Saturday, April 26th at 8:00 AM and will conclude on Sunday, April 27th at 10:00 AM, with family and friends gathering to honor her memory. A graveside service will follow at 11:00 AM at Washington Memorial Park (16445 International Blvd, SeaTac, WA 98188).
