John Victor Fortune, Sr. was born to Nick W. Fortune and Margie Lignitz in De Queen, Arkansas. He had three older brothers; Jim Fortune, Bill Fortune, and Nick Fortune, Jr., all whom have preceded him in death. His family moved to Eastern Washington in areas surrounding Wenatchee when he was a young boy. The family had fruit orchards that all of the boys worked in. The brothers were known for getting into mischief with their cars as they liked to race! John met and fell in love with Marlene Faye Fagg in Wenatchee when he was in his late teens. They were married in Washington and had 2 daughters and one son. Marlene preceded John in death from cancer in October 2002. John lovingly cared for her until the end which is an indication of the kind of man he was. He met Virginia “Ginny” Lee Cameron his second wife in Arizona where they married in 2004. Ginny also succumbed to cancer 10 years later while being cared for by John.
John started and owned Fortune Roofing in the Everett, Washington area for 29 years before he and Marlene retired to Arizona. He was a hard and diligent working man that cared about his employees and their ability to provide for their families. He passed that work ethic on to his children and grandchildren. The extended family is still involved in the roofing industry to this day.
The most important part of John’s life is that he was a born again believer in the Lord Jesus Christ! He was generous in his support of of others in need and of those who were preaching and sharing the Gospel. Growing to know the Lord more and serve Him was a focal point in his life! If you don’t know the Lord, please ask one of the family! We would love to bring you to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice for our sin so that you too can be with Him in heaven.
John is survived by his children; Terrie Fortune (66), Tami Wilkins (64), and John Fortune, Jr. (63). He is also survived by 5 granddaughters; Toni Akin Carlson, Amber Fortune Hamilton, Summer Fortune Riebs, Ashley Fortune Smith, and Lindsey Fortune Oliphant; 8 great grandsons (one preceded him in death), 3 great granddaughters, and 1 great great grandson (preceded him in death). He also is survived by 3 nieces, and multiple extended family members.
We look forward to seeing him again, praising and rejoicing with our Savior on the streets of gold!
