James was born to James Straley, Sr. and Suzanne Straley on May 25, 1961 in Flint, MI. While growing up in Flushing, MI, Jim enjoyed tennis, swimming and skiing. He graduated from Flushing High School in 1979 as a member of the National Honor Society. Jim went on to earn a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, 1985) and while there was a member of the Triangle Engineering Fraternity. He subsequently worked as an Electrical Engineer for Boeing in Everett, WA for many years. An avid reader and lover of lifelong learning, Jim later earned an additional degree from ITT Technical Institute in 2015. He was selected to be the Commencement speaker for that particular graduation ceremony.
He is survived by his parents Jim and Sue Straley of Boyne City, MI (formerly of Flushing, MI), brother Jeffrey (Rhonda) Straley of Flushing, MI, sister Jennifer of Charlevoix, MI, aunt Margaret Straley of Flushing, MI, as well as nieces Lauren, Juliyana and Aeryn. Especially dear to Jim, Jr.’s heart was his devoted caregiver and friend Ms. Tanya Power. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Tanya, as she and her 3 children brought care, companionship, love and joy to Jim for over 10 years.
