Herbert Swanson November 7, 1923 - March 20, 2023 Judge Herbert (Herb) Swanson, 99 passed away peacefully and with dignity and grace into the loving hands of his Lord at home in Sun City West, Arizona on March 20, 2023.
Herb was born on November 7, 1923 in Mount Vernon, WA to Anton and Catherine Swanson. His parents both immigrated to the U.S. from Sweden. Herb was brought up on a dairy farm in Stanwood, WA.
After graduation from High School, Herb attended Washington State University and later transferred to the University of Washington Law school, graduating in 1948. Thereafter, started his law practice in Everett, WA until 1965 when he was appointed by Governor Dan Evans to the Superior Court. He served as a trial judge until 1969, when he was appointed to the newly created Court of Appeals situated in Seattle where he served until 1990.
Herb met his future wife Vi at a picnic in Lake Whatcom. They were married on August 22, 1952 and made their home in Everett, where their two children Glen and Debbie were born. Glen in 1953 and Debbie in 1957.
After Herb retired from the court in 1990, Herb and Vi moved to Olympia WA to be near their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. Herb and Vi both attended Westwood Baptist Church in Olympia, WA. Winters were spent at their home in Sun City West, Arizona. Herb continued to spend his winters in AZ after his wife passed away. Retirement allowed him to enjoy golf in the warm weather of AZ.
The primary focus of his life was directed to his abiding faith in God, and then to the well-being of his family. He was very proud of his Swedish heritage and made many trips to Sweden.
He is survived by his loving daughter and son-in-law, Ted and Debbie Krumland, of Olympia; grandsons, Tyler, Eric (Heidi), and Tim, sister-in-law Pearl Norby, of Rochester, MN, and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind cousins in Sweden.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vi in 2007, his son Glen in 1990, his brother Marvin in 2005 and his parents Anton and Catherine Swanson.
A memorial service will be held at Grace Community Covenant Church in Olympia, WA on May 13, 2023 at 11:00 AM. Private Burial will be in Everett.
