Mr. Herman owned and operated Herman’s Turf Supply at Ellis Park for over 60 years and was a 70 year member of IBEW Local #16. He attended Reitz High School where he played football. Immediately after high school, he joined the United States Army Air Corps. After leaving service he became a thoroughbred owner and trainer and had a successful 60 year career. He was also a Kentucky Colonel. Shorty was a hard-working, kind hearted man. He enjoyed growing tomatoes, sitting on the backside of Ellis Park, feeding stray cats and birds. Most of all he enjoyed watching his grandson, Daniel play baseball. Shorty was dearly loved by family and friends and had recently celebrated his 90th birthday with two childhood friends from Reitz High School.
Surviving Shorty are two daughters, Sonja Herman and Lavon Wood, both of Evansville; a granddaughter, Tracey (Jeff) Titus and great grandchild, Daniel Sander; several nieces, nephews and his five beloved dogs.
Shorty was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Annetta (Eaves) Herman.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at Pierre Funeral Home, Pastor Ron Crawford officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, where the Vanderburgh County Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites.
Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 until 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday and from 10:00 A.M. until service time on Wednesday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Streeet.
