Mona Boyd Whinrey, age 82, of Evansville, passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2022. She was born July 28, 1940 to the late Lawrence E. Boyd and Louise Grayson Boyd. Mona grew up in the Howell neighborhood, attended Daniel Wertz Elementary School kindergarten through eighth grade, and graduated from Reitz High School in 1958. Mona attended Murray State for two years and obtained her bachelor of music education degree from the University of Evansville in 1962. She taught choral music at Dexter Elementary School for two years, and then obtained a master of music degree in piano from Indiana University. She served as a staff accompanist at Interlochen Summer Music Camp in 1962. Mona served two years on the faculty at Western Carolina University teaching piano. She then came home to the University of Evansville and taught piano for six years, and served as accompanist to many faculty members on their faculty recitals, and was a member of the University of Evansville piano string trio. Mona then changed careers and entered the nursing program at the University of Evansville. She completed her associate degree in nursing and became a certified registered nurse. She married John Whinrey, a lawyer, in 1975. Her daughter Anne was born in 1978.
Mona served as organist at Howell General Baptist Church, Grace Baptist Church, and East Side Christian Church.
Mona was a very active member of Howell General Baptist Church growing up, and later was a very active member of East Side Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She was a member of First Presbyterian Church at her death. Mona was a devout Christian. She was kind and broadly empathetic. She had daily devotions. She was an avid reader from the time she learned to read until the end of her life.
Mona and her husband John were supporters of refugee families from Honduras and Ukraine. Mona was a member of PEO, Chapter CC.
Mona is survived by her husband, John Whinrey, and her daughter, Anne Whinrey. She is also survived by her nephew, Christopher Boyd, and his children and grandchildren. Mona had a close relationship with her first cousins, Lana Bunner, Letha Deig, and Sharon Walker. Mona was predeceased by her brother, John Boyd.
Funeral services for Mona will be held at Alexander Funeral Home East, Saturday, September 17, at 1 p.m. officiated by Rev. David Livingston, with visitation from 10 a.m. until the funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made to Patchwork Central or the Vanderburgh County Humane Society.
