Melvin graduated from Reitz High School in 1941. He served in World War II with the Army Signal Corps for three years, first in Europe where his outfit used microwave relay for the first time to supply communications for General Patton. When the war ended in Europe, he served in the Pacific area. After returning from the service, he worked at Mead Johnson and then Bristol-Myers for 39 years, where he was a Director of Quality Control. He was a member of the American Society for Quality Control in which he earned the title of Quality Engineer. He was also a member of the American Chemical Society and the Scientec Club of Evansville. Melvin was an instructor for many classes in Quality Control and published several articles concerning his work. While in the service he attended Auburn and Georgia Tech Universities. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Evansville College in 1947.
Melvin was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Doris Jean (Gardner); Daughter-in-law, Gloria Schwartz.
He is survived by his son, Tom Schwartz; daughter, Jane Hodge (John); grandchildren, Michele Blankenship (James), Chad Schwartz (Linda), and Joshua Hodge; great grandchildren, Arielle, Jacob and Ashleigh Blankenship, Kyler, Kayden and Korbyn Hodge; special nieces, Penny Stegall and Ginny France.
Melvin’s family extends a special thanks to his caregivers.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at Alexander Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel officiated by Rev. Dr. William J. Wassner with burial to follow. Friends may visit 11:00 a.m. until service time at the Cemetery Chapel.
