He was a four sport athlete in Mt. Vernon High School, excelling in football and basketball. He was a Charter Member of Mt. Vernon High School Hall of Fame.
John was a U.S. Army Veteran. He worked at International Harvester, General Tire, Peyronnin Construction and General Electric for 29 years. After retiring he worked at Willow Park.
He was a Senior Deacon at Faith Temple Church of God in Christ. He loved working in the yard, traveling and “driving Miss Daisy.” He truly loved helping people.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Hubert Lethard and Callie Louise Johnson; sister, Willie Mae Williams; and brother, Hubert Ray Johnson.
John is survived by his wife of 40 years, Yvonne (Johnson) Johnson of Evansville; daughters, Ella Johnson-Watson (Gerald) of Evansville and Bronda Simmons (Rick) of Princeton; grandchildren, Briana Casara of Indianapolis, Jordan and Justin Simmons of Princeton, Jasmine and Kyle Watson of Evansville and Christian Simmons of Princeton; sister, Aileen Waller; and brother, Sammie Johnson (Phyllis), both of Mt. Vernon.
Services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Memorial Baptist Church, 605 Canal Street, officiated by Rev. John D. Dennis III with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Alexander East Chapel with a 7:00 PM Memorial Service.
