Jessie M. Kirby, of Detroit, MI, formerly of Evansville, passed away Monday, June 20, 2011, in Detroit. She was born October 1, 1921, in Marengo County, AL. She was the fourth child born to the union of Frank and Louise Carter.
Her powerful spirit and beauty was recognized early and she earned the nickname “Brighteyes.” She loved to dance, smile, laugh and spend time with family and friends. Brighteyes was a member of the Lincoln Clark Douglas Alumni Association and really enjoyed participating in all the reunion activities. Jessie retired from Woolworth after 40 years and started a new work life as a volunteer. She had a strong belief in God and his goodness. Her dedicated service to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church was a reflection of the importance of God, family and community in her life.
Jessie was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bill and Dudley Carter; sisters, Lillie “Honey” Anderson, Betty Ann Johnson Reed and Dorothy “Dot” Downer; and husband, Leslie “Ike” Kirby, Sr.
Brighteyes leaves to cherish her memory: three sons, Clarence (Joanne) of Albuquerque, NM, Leslie G. (Rochell) “Les K” Jr. and Ronald “Ron”, both of Detroit; four grandchildren, Chelsea, Michael, Ronjanae and Dionna; four great-grandchildren, Isiah, Sarah, Miciah and Olivia; nieces, Louise, Milan, Janet Johnson and Gina Johnson; nephews, Willy “Bill” Carter, Jr., Dudley “Buddy” Carter, Jr., Jerry Anderson, Kenneth Johnson, Jr. and Gregory Johnson; other nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; along with a host of cousins and friends.
Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at Oak Hill Cemetery.
