Janet Carol Hasselbrinck Wheeler, 82, of Evansville, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, November 29, 2022 after a brief illness at Ascension St. Vincent Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She was born September 28, 1940 in Princeton, Indiana to the late Frederick and Evelyn Hasselbrinck.
Janet grew up on a rural family farm in Princeton. She graduated from Princeton High School in 1958 where she was a member of the marching band that made a memorable journey to New Orleans. Janet was a faithful member of Blue Grass United Methodist Church and cared passionately about the Blue Grass Cemetery assisting her beloved husband John in nurturing and caring for the grounds. Janet married the love of her life on July 11, 1958 and began a farm journey that lasted their entire 56 year marriage. Janet joined John in not only planting seeds in the ground but partnered with him in becoming a bus driver for the EVSC helping grow the next generation with kindness. After John’s death in 2014, Janet utilized her time to participate in the Blue Grass Belles and missions at her church going on a trip to Guatemala where she was an active participant in building walls of a community building. Not only known for an impactful work ethic,
Janet was a tremendous cook who could feed an entire household of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, or a work crew preparing to bail hay on a brutal July day only to follow the work crew out to bail the hay herself. She loved crafting, gardening and thoroughly enjoyed making beautiful floral arrangements. She couldn’t wait to get to heaven to greet John with a huge hug.
Janet is survived by her four children, Joan (Michael) Mentzel, Jane Stanley, John (Sherri) Wheeler, and Jeff (Aundrea) Wheeler. “Nana” was adored by her grandchildren, Jacob (Amanda) Mentzel, Matt (Megan) Mentzel, Andy (Emily) Thomas, John Mentzel, Jeremy Wheeler, Jennifer (Cody) Ratliff, Jonathan Hudson, Brennan Musich, and Beau Wheeler, and great grandchildren, Peter, Lucy, Iain, Abraham, Geneva, Ozias and Haddon Mentzel, Adelaide O’Toole, Makinley and Raegan Thomas.
