James A. Reimann, 81, of Evansville, passed away Monday, January 30, 2017 at Deaconess Hospital. He was born September 18, 1935 in Poseyville, IN to the late Henry C. and Elizabeth L. (Kuehn) Reimann. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Irene Mae (Reimann) Powell.
At the age of 9, he moved to Darmstadt, Indiana to the current family farm and homestead, where he spent most of his life. Jim graduated from Evansville Reitz High School in 1953. He served his country as a radarman in the US Navy from 1954-58 aboard the USS Oglethorpe. In 1958, immediately after finishing his service, he purchased a 1956 Ford in Norfolk, VA and drove all the way to Haines, Alaska to marry the love of his life, Barbara Ann Niethammer, where she served as a missionary at an Alaskan orphanage. Jim started his family while also attending the University of Kentucky and graduated with a BS. degree in Agriculture in 1964.
Jim worked 2 jobs: farming strawberries and hauling asphalt for Midwest Construction until 1973 when he decided to devote his life to full-time farming. From 1965-80, Jim and his family operated several U-Pick strawberry patches around town. He branched out to vegetable and fruit farm markets, where along with help from his wife, daughters, nephews, nieces, grandchildren and friends, they provided a variety of home grown vegetables to the Evansville community at several locations. Jim and Barb could often be seen riding around together in their golf cart working and supervising the farm. He enjoyed tending to his plants and watching them grow. Jim also loved talking with his many customers and friends.
He was a lifelong member of Salem Church of Darmstadt and a past member of Kiwanis, Farm Bureau and the VFW. He enjoyed watching college basketball, especially his favorites: the University of Kentucky and the University of Evansville. Jim always wore a cap and liked listening to country music radio stations.
