Gerald L. "Jerry" Schreiber, 86, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at Evansville Heart to Heart Hospice. Jerry was born in Evansville, Indiana on July 22, 1936 to the late Albert and Alta (Brand) Schreiber.
Schreiber was a legend among golfers in the area. A nine-time Evansville Men’s City Golf Tournament champion, Jerry was a fierce competitor, but also a mentor to many, and a friend to everyone. Jerry was quoted in an interview with Golfweek, saying, “It’s nice to win tournaments, but it’s just the people that I have met and still have contact with. That’s what golf’s all about.” Jerry’s golf accomplishments were numerous and culminated in his induction into the Indiana Golf Hall of Fame in 1982.
Jerry graduated from Central High School in 1954. He served his country in the US Navy, stationed aboard the USS Wasp (CV-18) aircraft carrier from 1955 to 1957. He worked at N.M. Bunge Masonry of Evansville beginning as a journeyman in 1959. He served as President and Chairman from 1975 until his retirement in 1996, passing the reins of the family business to daughter, Tammy Evans, son, Troy Schreiber, and son-in-law, Bill Evans. Jerry was a melanoma survivor. He and his wife, Phyllis started the Melanoma Classic at Evansville Country Club in 2014. The event’s proceeds benefited Vanderbilt’s melanoma research. Jerry was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. He was a friend to all he met.
GOLF ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Nine-time Evansville City champion (1959, ’61, ’62, ’63, ’64, ’65, ’67, ’68 and ’75); five-time Tri-State Open champion (Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois; 1960, ’61, ’64, ‘66 and ‘72); four-time Fendrich Open champion (1963, ’66, ’68 and ‘75); qualifying medalist Indiana State Amateur (1965 and ’67); four-time U.S. Amateur qualifier (1960, ’64, ’65 and ’68), including Round of 16 in ’64; inducted into the Indiana Golf Hall of Fame in 1982.
Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Albert and his mother, Alta; and in-laws, Norval "Tubby" and Grace Bunge.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Bunge) of Evansville, IN; daughter, Tammy Evans (Bill) of Evansville, IN; son, Troy Schreiber (Rose Ann) of Newburgh, IN; brother Ken Schreiber (Mary) of Evansville, IN; grandchildren, Beth DeBlanc (Michael) of Evansville, IN, Madison Breur (Christiaan) Austin, TX, and Mason Schreiber of Newburgh, IN; great-grandchildren, Eli DeBlanc, Owen DeBlanc, and Beckham Breur.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, or the Dan Scism Memorial Scholarship.
