George was the president of the first graduating class of Perry Heights K-8 School and went on to graduate from F.J. Reitz High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1949, achieving the rank of Hospitalman Second Class. Before setting sail for 14 months in the South Pacific, George trained and traveled across the U.S, including time in Bethesda, Maryland and Oakland, California. He was stationed aboard the USS Whidbey, a medical ship the crew fondly called "The Mighty Whid", where he cared for both fellow servicemen and local islanders. After his time in the Navy, George attended Evansville College and Indiana State University.
George began his career at Hoosier Cardinal before spending 35 years working in the Quality Control Lab at Mead Johnson/Bristol Myers, retiring in February 1988. He was known as a steady, hardworking employee who took pride in doing the job right.
He was a kind and easygoing man who never spoke badly about anyone. He never wanted to be a burden and was always ready with a kind word or quick joke. George enjoyed staying active and involved in games and sports. He played in local softball, tennis and bowling leagues over the years, collecting more than a few trophies along the way. He loved playing clabber and euchre and also enjoyed square dancing in his earlier years. If he wasn't playing a game, he was usually watching one - he followed just about every sport he could.
George is survived by his three children: Terry (Lisa) Appel, Pam Appel, and Judy (Jim) Boyle; Virginia Wyatt, the mother of his children; his seven grandsons: Sean (Kasie), lan, and Evan Appel; Greg (Brooke) and Ben (Allison) Appel; and Andy (Elizabeth) and Dan (Kaitlin) Boyle: ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Ruth Appel Steele; his brothers Paul, Albert, and Charles Appel; a niece; and two great-granddaughters.
A Memorial visitation will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at Alexander West Chapel, 2100 W. Illinois Street, Evansville, IN. George's final resting place will be at Alexander Memorial Park at a later date.
