He was a graduate of Reitz High School where he was a member of the basketball team which went to the semi-state playoffs. He also ran cross country and track in the state regionals. After high school he attended night classes at the University of Evansville where he studied Chemistry. Gary worked for Bristol Myers (formerly Mead Johnson) for 34 years and retired as a Research Scientist. He had many hobbies throughout his life including fishing, target shooting, model railroads, weightlifting, oil painting, but his true passion was playing music. He was founder and member of many rock and roll bands in the tri-state area from the late 1960’s through the early 2010’s. He was self-taught in piano, Bass guitar, and keyboards, and sang lead vocals. After Gary retired, he immersed himself in playing music. He transformed his basement into a recording studio where he would spend countless hours practicing new songs. Gary loved the Indianapolis 500 which he attended over 40 times with his immediate family. No matter where all his family moved, they always spent Memorial Day weekend together in Indy.
Gary was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret F. (Addington) Scheneman; father, Leo Kenneth Moore; sister, Nancy (Moore) Grammer.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years J. Elaine (Watkins); daughter and son-in-law, Julie Moore and Mark Schulte, St. Louis; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Karen Moore, Venice, FL; grandchildren, Molly Moore, Sara (Moore) Nowlin, Rebecca Schulte, Megan Schulte; stepson and wife, Paul and Sherrie Head, Newark, DE; stepson and wife, Steven and Rhonda Head, Evansville, IN; three step grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 9, 2019 at Alexander West Chapel officiated by Celebrant Carrie Hatchett with burial to follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit 1-5 p.m. on Sunday and 10-11 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
