Obituary of Edward "Ed" Leonard Valentine
Edward “Ed” Leonard Valentine, 87, of Evansville, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at Columbia Healthcare. He was born September 1, 1927, in Chelmsford, MA, to the late William and Tafelia Valentine. His parents were from Lithuania and came to America in 1914. He served in the Army during late WWII and played trumpet in the Army Band. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a degree in the Dairy Industry. However; music still was his first love and he became a music teacher and performer for over 60 years. He played the accordion at Turoni’s on Main Street every Friday night beginning in 1979 and continued to do so until he retired in 2012. He was a member of St. Benedict’s Cathedral. Ed met his wife, Doris, also a music teacher, while they both were living in San Diego. They married in 1957 and were nearly ready to celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Deborah Valentine, R.N., of San Diego, Ca, James Valentine of Fishers, IN, and Dr. Gerald Valentine of Hamden, CT. They have five grandchildren, Tanner and Chase Kragenbrink, and Gina, Carly and Ava Valentine. Ed and Doris owned two music stores in Chino, CA, and Upland, CA, but moved to Evansville in 1979 to join the Krug family in business with Zesto and Huggy’s restaurants. He was proud to be involved in the movie, A League of Their Own, where he played in the band. He enjoyed entertaining the actors during their breaks. Funeral Services will be 1:00 PM Saturday, May 9, 2015, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by the Very Rev. Godfrey Mullen, OSB, with entombment in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM and Saturday from 12:00 PM until service time at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
