Don graduated from South Side High School in Fort Wayne in 1941, went to work for General Electric, and married his high school sweetheart, Marjorie (Marnie) Dyer. Don served in WWII as a B-17 Navigator, completing 27 combat missions in the European Theater before returning to serve 20 years in the Air Force Reserves and retiring as a Major. Don spent most of his career in the Savings and Loan business including posts in; Kokomo, Seymour, and Evansville, IN; and Carbondale, IL.
Don gave willingly and completely of his many God-given talents. He was a man of deep faith, strong principles, unflagging patience, and high energy. He was an extraordinary husband, an exemplary father to his six children, and a wonderful role model for his grandchildren. In the precious little time he took for himself, he enjoyed sailing his Flying Scot on Crab Orchard and Monroe Lakes.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, Esther (Spiegel) Meyer and Herbert William Meyer, Sr; his brothers Herbert and Stanley Meyer; his son Donald LeRoy Meyer, Jr; and his son-in-law, John Gotch
He is survived by: his wife of 69 years, Marjorie (Marnie); his children Gary (Ina) of Rockville Centre, New York; Lou Ann Gotch of Stewartville, Minnesota; Janice (Bob) Congdon of Ovid, New York; Wendy (Steve) Thomas of Evansville; Jonathan (Debra) of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; and Joseph (Julie) of Evansville. He is also survived by: his twin brother, Edward Allen Meyer, sister Dorothy (Meyer) Buuck; 16 grandchildren including; Oliver (Kristen), Katie (Andy) Hermann and Noah (Lauren) Thomas; and Mallory, Ben, and Haley Meyer, all from Evansville; and 15 great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staffs at the Good Samaritan Home and at Hamilton Pointe for their care during the past several years.
A service will be held at Aldersgate Methodist Church at a later date.
