

Donald Lee Cargill, 63, died Monday, April 2, 2012, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, following a long struggle with cancer. He was a gifted artist. He was devoted to God and his family and friends. He was an animal lover, a sports enthusiast and a collector.
Don was born in 1948 to Beatrice and Art Cargill in Evansville, Indiana, his lifelong place of residence. He graduated from North High School in 1966 and soon after enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in the 2nd Battalion, 26th Marines. His tour in Vietnam included the siege at Khe Sanh, where he was stationed on Hill 558. He meritoriously earned the rank of Sergeant E-5 at age 18, and was presented with the Presidential Unit Citation. His patriotism and pride in the Marine Corps remained a strong influence throughout his lifetime.
He earned a B.S. in Art from the University of Southern Indiana. He most recently was employed for 20 years by Krieger-Ragsdale Printing and Lithography. He attended Good Shepherd Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Melodie (Brown) Cargill; his mother, Beatrice Vandiver; sister-in-law, Melissa Ogura; two nieces, Nicki Willis and Ashley Ogg and their children; former sister-in-law, Terri O’Connor; his aunt, Faye Dickman; nephew, James Sedwick; many dear cousins; step-mother, Margie Cargill; step brothers, Robert and Roger Grissom, Steve Vandiver; and step-sister, Rita.
He was preceded in death by his father, Art Cargill; brother, Gary T. Cargill; and aunt, Mary Lou Viehe.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday, April 9, 2012, at Alexander North Funeral Home and on Tuesday from 9:00 AM until service time at the church. A funeral Mass will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 10:00 am, officiated by Father Ted Tempel and Father Zach Etienne, followed by a military ceremony at Sunset Memorial Park.
