David Roy Wood, 78, of Evansville, passed away Monday, May 22, 2017, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital. He was born December 26, 1938, in Evansville, to the late Roy Albert and Rosalyn Elizabeth (Schroeder) Wood.
He was a 1957 graduate of Bosse High School and a veteran of the US Army. He began his lifetime broadcasting career at WJPS and then became a DJ at WIKY. Throughout his career, David was a promoter, during which time he began NTA Studios, program director, station manager, and provided work for Dick Clark. He hosted Daddy Dave’s Hollywood Diner on XM Radio and held his Real Estate license. David led a very interesting public career. He was also an amateur pilot and ham radio operator; W9AJR was his call sign. David was an accomplished artist and portrait painter, providing freelance forensic drawings and skull reconstructions for police departments and the FBI. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing, hunting, fine dining, and photography. David especially enjoyed watching his grandson, Daniel, play baseball. He loved Bluegrass music and played the banjo and ukulele.
David was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wayne and Ned; and daughter, Ann.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Wood; son, Christopher (Karla) Wood of Boonville; daughters, Wendy (Phil) Thorson and Tracey (Jeff) Titus, both of Evansville; grandchildren, Phillip Wood, Ashley (Blake) Horton, Brandon Wood, and Daniel Sander; five great-grandchildren; former wife and very special friend, Lavon Wood; and sisters-in-law, Sonja Herman, Brenda Wood, and Joyce Wood.
Funeral Services will be 10:00 AM Thursday, May 25, 2017, at Christian Fellowship Church, 4100 Millersburg Road, officiated by Rev. Spencer Downs, with burial in McCutchanville Cemetery. Friends may visit Wednesday from 2:00 to 8:00 PM at Alexander East Chapel, 2115 Lincoln Avenue.
